PARK CITY, Utah -- A Utah woman who authorities say fatally poisoned her husband, then published a children’s book about coping with grief, will appear in court Wednesday for a hearing that will determine whether state prosecutors have enough evidence against her to proceed with a trial. Kouri Richins, 33, faces several felony charges for allegedly killing her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022 at their home in a small mountain town near Park City. Prosecutors say she slipped five times the lethal dose of the synthetic opioid into a Moscow mule cocktail that Eric Richins, 39, drank. She previously tried to kill him with a spiked sandwich on Valentine's Day, charging documents allege. In the months leading up to her arrest in May 2023, the mother of three self-published the children’s book “Are You with Me?” about a father with angel wings watching over his young son after passing away. The book could play a key role for prosecutors in framing the crime as a calculated murder with an elaborate cover-up attempt.

Gilgo Serial killer Rex Heuermann charged with murders 5, and 6. Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann kept meticulous notes on his kills — including reminders for future murders like “hit harder” and to get more sleep to have more “play time,” prosecutors revealed Thursday — as he was charged with two more slayings. Heuermann, 60, who is accused of killing multiple women and leaving their remains scattered along Long Island’s Ocean Parkway, appeared in court Thursday morning and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges for the 1993 death of Sandra Costilla and the 2003 killing of Jessica Taylor. He nodded along as Suffolk County prosecutors read aloud from an alleged “planning document” recovered from a computer in his Massapequa Park home that they say served as a “blueprint” for his twisted crimes and showed his “obvious” intention to kill the women. Heuermann, 60, was back in court on Thursday morning where he was arraigned on murder charges in the 2003 dismemberment death of Jessica Taylor, 20, and the 1993 death of Sandra Costilla, 28. “We know that criminals in general...their modus operandi can change through the course of their life,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said on Thursday. “There was no dismemberment with regard to the original four, but there is with regard to Ms Taylor.” The Manhattan architect has already been charged with the 2009 and 2010 murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes — known as the “Gilgo Four.” He pleaded not guilty. The charges come days after Gilgo Beach Task Force investigators completed a second search of Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park and a search of an area of Manorville where the partial remains of two women, Taylor and Valerie Mack, were found in the early 2000s. Mack is not part of Thursday’s new indictment, but Tierney said it’s “fair” to consider Heuermann a suspect in her murder. (Independent)

The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office declined to comment but acknowledged that Heuermann is due back in court Thursday morning for a previously unscheduled hearing. Unnamed sources told Newsday, the local newspaper, that the suspected serial killer has already been indicted on unspecified charges in connection with new developments in the case. A task force including police K-9s from Suffolk County, the NYPD and New York State uncovered evidence in Manorville in April, a month before investigators returned to Heuermann’s house in May for a second search warrant. In July 2023, they arrested Heuermann outside his Manhattan architecture firm and spent nearly two weeks scouring through his home in Massapequa Park, about 20 minutes from where police found the bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Costello, 27, in 2010. Prosecutors later tacked on charges for the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, whose remains they found near the others.
